Strict biosecurity applies to both Australia and New Zealand
Oceania enforces some of the world’s strictest biosecurity regulations. Both Australia and New Zealand inspect every imported motorcycle for soil, organic matter, and biological contamination before release. This is the single most important thing to know before shipping to either country.
Australia — ABF & DAFF
Inspected by Australian Border Force and the Department of Agriculture. A steam cleaning certificate is required before shipping. Motorcycles without the certificate can be quarantined on arrival. Have the bike professionally steam cleaned and obtain the certificate before pickup day.
New Zealand — MPI
Inspected by the Ministry for Primary Industries. No separate certificate required — but the motorcycle must arrive in showroom condition. MPI inspects every used motorcycle on arrival. If contamination is found, the bike is quarantined and professionally cleaned at your cost. Add 5–10 business days for MPI clearance after the vessel docks.
For both countries: Clean your motorcycle thoroughly before pickup — no dirt, mud, soil, or organic matter on wheels, tyres, undercarriage, engine, or any crevice. Photograph the bike before pickup to document its condition.
RoRo vs container shipping to Oceania
Both methods are available for Australia and New Zealand. Container shipping is more widely recommended for Oceania than for European routes — the long Pacific crossing and strict biosecurity requirements make the added protection worthwhile for most motorcycles.
RoRo — Roll-On/Roll-Off
Standard — motorcycle must be in working order
Your motorcycle is ridden onto the vessel and secured on the enclosed car deck for the full Pacific crossing. Guaranteed departure and arrival dates. Cost-effective. Bike must be in full working order and able to be ridden onto the vessel. All bikes are still subject to biosecurity inspection on arrival regardless of shipping method.
Container Shipping
Shared or exclusive — recommended for most Oceania shipments
Shared: Your bike shares a container — cost-effective, non-running bikes accepted, departure may wait until the container fills.
Exclusive: Entire container for your motorcycle — guaranteed departure, maximum protection for the long Pacific crossing. Recommended for high-value, vintage, or collector bikes.

On arrival, your motorcycle undergoes biosecurity inspection — ABF/DAFF in Australia, MPI in New Zealand. Your assigned customs broker handles both biosecurity coordination and customs clearance. New Zealand adds 5–10 business days for MPI clearance after docking.
